Sheet metal parts are designed in detail in 3D CAD. The 3D model includes all geometry and parameters such as material type and bending allowance. This means that the 'flat' unfolded view can be generated automatically and applied to a 2D drawing. The 2D drawing can then easily be transferred to your manufacturing facility of choice.

Plastic parts are designed fully in 3D with geometric details included all relevant draft angles. This means that 3D models can be tranferred directly to the toolmaker. 2D drawings can then be used to contain dimensions to verify the parts during incoming quality inspections. The drawings can also contain important tolerances that need to be observed and specifications for the surface requirements, materials etc.
